For the elderly in Gurgaon, it was a special evening at the community centre of DLF Phase II on May 13. As hundreds of senior citizens assembled from various parts of the city, renowned singers from the NCR recreated a bygone era when they performed on melodious songs of the 1970s.
The occasion was a musical evening dedicated to the showman of the Hindi film industry – Raj Kapoor. Evergreen songs such as mai shayar toh nahi, pyar hua ikraar hua, satyam shivam sundaram and jane kahan gaye wo din left the audience mesmerised.
“They listen to you with so much affection that you can’t stop yourself from giving your best. I try not to miss an opportunity to sing for them,” said Sanjay Pandey a performer at the event.
The event was organised by Global Cultural Foundation, a group of music enthusiasts based in Gurgaon. It was founded in 2008. The aim of the event was to bring residents closer and provide a platform for entertainment. The group organises such events monthly to also encourage talented singers and promote communication among them.
Col (Retd) RC Chadha, founder of GCF, told City Spidey, “We all have been connected to that time and such events fill us with vigour. These events are not just meant for senior citizens, but also offer a chance to budding artists. When they perform here, it boosts their self confidence.”
Renowned singers from the NCR such as Lilly Singh, Sanjay Pandey, Pradeep Sharma and Tuhina Chatterjee graced the evening with their presence and performances.
Pradeep Sharma, a professional singer, told City Spidey, “I am a diehard fan of Mukesh ji. It was a great experience to performing here.”
“I love performing on Raj ji’s songs. He has been one of my favourite actors. It’s very motivating when people appreciate your singing,” said Lilly Singh.
Meanwhile, budding artists got a chance to showcase their talent. And senior citizens were also not far behind and participated actively. The excitement and energy in the atmosphere was palpable as the audience danced on the numbers and remembered old times.
"Every song from that era has some meaning. I make it a point to never miss these events. They let us relive the days of our youth and we always look forward to such occasions," said 62-year-old Parvesh Chadha.TAGS: Gurgaon / DLF Phase II / NCR / Raj Kapoor / Global Cultural Foundation / RC Chadha / Lilly Singh / Sanjay Pandey / Pradeep Sharma / Tuhina Chatterjee
