DJB gears up for cleaning of septic tanks at unauthorised colonies

Chief Minister and Delhi Jal Board (DJB) Chairman Arvind Kejriwal on Friday decided to procure 80 trucks which will be deployed for service in cleaning of septic tanks at more than 800 unauthorised colonies with a population of around 45 lakh.

He said that the services will be extended to the colonies where sewer lines have not reached.

DJB CEO Nikhil Kumar informed press that out of the total 1,797 notified unauthorised colonies, only 430 have sewer lines.

Kumar said, “Currently, installation of sewer pipelines is underway at 400 colonies. The others are dependent of septic tanks which are cleaned by informal workers. The workers are under the threat of accidents as they carry out cleaning without safety gear.”

“The trucks, for which tendering will be carried out within a month, will be procured under the Mukhyamantri Septic Tank Safai Yojana,” Kejriwal said.

“The DJB, which is the city’s nodal agency on water resources, will provide safety equipment to workers deployed for the cleaning of septic tanks,” an official statement said.
