Gurugram: Residents of Antriksh Heights, located in sector 84, have a harrowing time grappling with the monkey menace. Thanks to the simians on the prowl in the area, they are constantly living under fear.

Scared of the monkeys, many residents prefer to stay indoors most of the time with the doors, windows and balconies of their apartments closed. They have stopped children from playing out after several incidents of monkey attack came to light.

For the last six months, the monkeys are roaming around the society premises freely creating a nuisance. According to the residents, there is a vacant plot near their society from where these monkeys fan out in packs of 15-20 posing threat to their limbs and property. They even cause dents and scratches to their vehicles parked in the basement.

The society houses 1,150 flats in which around 500 families reside. The residents claim that several cases of money attack and bite have been reported in the society.

Recounting her own experience, Mahua Dutta, a resident of the society, said,  “They come in groups and do a lot of damage to our properties. Even people living in tenth floor flats are not safe from their mischiefs.

They break flower pots, tear off clothes, scatter waste and create all sorts of nuisance in the society premises.”

Only last week, a resident was attacked by a monkey. He, however, could be able to escape using his wit. Simian attacks have become commonplace in the society. What is more disturbing is that they can't even sleep in peace during nights after day's hard work as the monkeys keep howling.

The residents say that they made several complaints about the monkey menace to the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram and the Forest Department but to no avail. With the spurt in the incidence of monkey attack in the society, the residents have filed a complaint with CM window seeking some relief.

Avinish Dahiya, vice-president of Antriksh Heights RWA, said, “Residents especially women, kids and seniors citizens are not feeling safe even in the society. We have filed a complaint in CM window on the matter hoping some action to curb this menace.”

Earlier, the society had hired langur to shoo away the monkeys. However, this strategy did not prove effective.

Sumit Sihmar, joint secretary of Antriksh Heights RWA, said, “We are feeling helpless and don't know how to tackle the situation. My wife is pregnant, but still, she avoids sitting in the balcony or going out for a walk in the park due to fear of the monkeys. We have a playschool but unable to send the young children for fear of monkeys.”
