Ghaziabad RWAs move EPCA against civic agencies

Ghaziabad: Noting that high air pollution level is persisting for a long period in Ghaziabad, RWA Federation of Ghaziabad wrote to Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA) Chairman, Bhure Lal, lashed out at civic agencies for not taking adequate measures to mitigate the situation.

Stating that apart from giving orders for shutting down diesel generator, brick kilns etc. the agencies have done nothing to fix accountability of the officials.

The federation also said that after this timeline is over they would press for transfer of the Municipal Commissioner. "We shall write to senior officials and even could knock the doors of courts for it," asserted TP Tyagi, chairman of the federation.

The issue also came up for discussion during their general body meeting on Sunday when the members came down heavily on the civic agencies for what they called as their lackadaisical attitude towards handling this situation.

"Due to the apathy of officials, residents of the city, including children and senior citizens, have to pay a heavy price," alleged Tyagi.

He wondered why no CNG or electrical buses had been made operational in the city so far to augment the public transport system in the city apart from reducing the carbon emissions released into the air by vehicular traffic.

Tyagi also rued over non implementation of the measures suggested by the federation such as vertical gardening. This, he said could have reduced pollution and would have led to the arrest of particulate matter (PM) 2.5 levels below 400.

In the meeting, the federation passed a few proposals to be submitted to district administration on Monday.  The proposals are:

  1. The administration should start work in 15 days on reducing air pollution in the city
  2. Till the AQI comes down below 100 no new construction work should be allowed by GDA
  3. The Sahibabad Drain passing through Sectors 1, 2 and 3 of Vaishali should be covered
