Garbage burns as civic authorities look the other way

Despite the Supreme Court’s strictures over air pollution in Delhi-NCR, local authorities in Delhi do not seem to be serious about tackling the issue. This is evident from an incident of garbage burning in in Krishna Nagar.

A huge pile of garbage was set on fire near a metro station on Monday morning. The flames took 20 minutes to finish off the garbage. All this while, plumes of thick smoke were released into the atmosphere.

Some officials from civic did visit the spot on a complaint from locals about the illegal garbage burning, but it was too late. By the time they reached the site of the fire, it was all over. In the aftermath of the garbage burning, people living in the vicinity are complaining of breathing problem due to the toxic content in the atmosphere.

This is not the first time when the violation of environmental norms has taken place in the area. Garbage burning in the open near the metro here is a routine affair.

A shopkeeper of the area informed that the waste collected from households is routinely dumped in the open field of the Metro’s unused plot only to be burnt later. Composting the waste is never considered by the people involved in waste management.

“We are paying the price of living near the metro. We are forced to inhale toxic pollutants generated by burning plastic and bio waste,” bemoaned the shop keepers.

He sais they had approached the Delhi Pollution Control Board among other authorities with the complaint of garbage burning. But they simply feign ignorance about any such incident.
