Dwarka: It has been observed that the open-air gyms installed at the parks have become a place of open drinking after dark all across Dwarka. Used bottles of liquor, glasses and snacks can be seen scattered at open-air gyms in the morning.

Often, the drinkers use the equipment installed at the open-air gyms as table and keep their glasses on it while partying. The worst part is that they don’t dispose of the used bottles, glasses and leftovers of snacks at designated place.

They also litter the waste on the surface of the gyms which are made of rubber tiles. Morning walkers and the gym users said that they are in the constant habit of cleaning the area in the morning.

Sarvesh Singh, a regular visitor at the gym installed at the DDA Park in Sector 19 said, “I observed that such practice increases at weekends. I reckon that they find the open gyms as comfortable place for drinking.”

There are more than 300 parks of different sizes across Dwarka. They have been under the civic bodies like Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). Such incidents of drinking at open-air gyms are mostly reported from the bigger parks.

“In last few years, the number of gyms has increased. Gyms have become a preferred place for drinking. The authorities such as DDA and SDMC should arrange security guards to check this practice. Police should also patrol in the parks,” Singh said.

Miffed with the waste littered at the parks, Singh said, “Use of gym’s space for open drinking is not good at all. The gyms are for improving health,” he concluded.
