Dwarka: Inclined trees pose threat to commuters; authorities nonchalant

Dwarka: The sub-city of Dwarka has been witnessing many dangerously inclined trees alongside roads. There are hundreds of such trees posing threat to the commuters on the road.

These trees are on footpaths and on the central verge of the master plan road and the other roads inside the sectors. These trees are mostly seen on master plan roads 201, 226, 202 etc.

President of Ganpati Apartments in Sector 9, Advocate KS Bhati said, “One can see inclined trees from Ganpati Chowk towards Sector 9 station. A tree on central verge near Paradise Apartments in Sector 9 is inclined to such a degree that it can fall anytime. This is dangerous for the commuters. The authorities should look into the matter and remove it from there.”

Some trees have also fallen down. These trees are lying on footpath creating hindrance to the pedestrians too.

A Sheesham (Indian Rosewood) tree, in front of Kautilya Apartments in Sector 14, is inclined towards main road in such a way that it can fall anytime. It is affected by termites and has become weak from the root.

Jitendra Singh, a resident of Kautilya Apartments said, “DDA should immediately remove this tree as it can fall anytime and can prove fatal to the commuters.”

Environment lovers and activists said that such trees are getting weaker due to rain and small space at the base to expand. They suggested DDA to look into the matter.

The matter has been raised by different RWAs and social organisations with the horticulture department and Delhi Development Authority (DDA) many times. The authorities assured action but nothing was done on the ground.

Officials informed on the condition of anonymity that they had written to forest department for permission to remove those trees but that too seems to be only an official process.

It is an irony that despite that such responses from the authorities, such trees are falling and are about to fall on the roads. Some vehicles were crushed below the falling trees earlier.

People have been requesting for removal of trees but only time will tell whether authorities have taken the matter seriously or not.
