Pond rejuvenation project gets underway in Gurugram

Gurugram: Gurugram Mayor Madhu Azad on Friday launched the restoration and rejuvenation of water bodies in Udyog Vihar under the Gurujal project. Under the project, the administration hopes to revive ponds in the Gurugram district.

Councillors, Virendra Raj Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav, RS Rathi, Mahesh Dayma and former councilor Mangataram Bagdi along with representatives of NGO Force and Rio Tinto Company were present at the launch of the project.

To start with, restoration and rejuvenation work on 17 ponds has got underway.

Strangely, contrary to the efforts of the district administration to revive the water bodies, locals in Udyog Vihar filled a pond filled with dirt and debris.

The ponds are being revived at the initiative of the NGO Force, which lobbied with local councillor, Virendra Raj Yadav, to get approval of the civic body for the project. Rio Tinto, a company based in the cyber city, also came in support of the project with funds for all the expenses to be incurred on it under its CSR initiative.

While the fund will be provided by the Rio Tinto, the restoration work would be done under the supervision of the NGO Force.

While addressing the gathering, Mayor Madhu Azad said that the government was very serious about reviving the ponds for which a campaign has already initiated under Jalashakti and Gurujal campaign.

She said, “Water is our basic need and life is not possible without it. If we do not pay attention to save water now, the future generation willl face a lot of problem. The underground water level is gradually decreasing and Delhi-NCR has been declared a dark zone. We all should pay attention to conserve water and harvest it.”
