Gurugram: In an effort to clear the city of construction and demolition (C&D) debris, the Municipal Corporation Gurugram has started C&D waste plant at Basai.

According to the civic body, the C&D activities are very high in Gurugram due to which debris is generated in large quantities.

MCG Commissioner Amit Khatri said, "We have taken steps to solve this problem and C&D waste management unit has been started by IL&FS at Basai. The processed waste will be used in making tiles, bricks, crushers, etc."

"A total of 70,000 tonnes of debris lying at various places in the city have been picked up so far. The MCG and the district administration have taken the issue seriously," he said.

The plant has a capacity to process 300 tonnes of debris per day. It has been provisioned to increase to 1,500 tonnes per day. Moreover, two mobile units will be installed at the auto market located at Basai Road to recycle C&D waste. Each will have a capacity to process 200 tonnes of debris per day.

Notably, Ashok Sangwan, divisional commissioner, also held a meeting in this regard and gave instructions to the concerned departments to clear the debris.

Executive Engineer Amit Sandilya has been appointed as the nodal officer by the MCG.

According to MCG officials, they have empanelled two agencies for door-to-door debris collection. Anyone wanting to pick up their C&D waste can contact at 9466726263 and 7005674475. Authorised vehicles of the agency will pick up the debris from the site. 

In lieu of this, one has to pay according to the rates set by the MCG. Unauthorised dumping of debris will be considered as a punishable offense with a provision for heavy fines and imprisonment.

Additional Municipal Commissioner, YS Gupta, informed that vehicles illegally dumping debris will be impounded under Section 292 (2) of Haryana Municipal Corporation Act 1994. Illegal dumping of debris will also be considered as a punishable offense under Section 188, 269, 278.  

Action will also be taken under sections 290 and 336 of Environment Protection Act-1986 and Section 15 (1) and (2) of Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act-1981. A provision of imprisonment and heavy fines has been made under them.
