Gurugram: On the occasion of 48th Vijay Diwas, Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Imran Raza along with ex-servicemen paid homage to the martyrs who laid down their lives while protecting the country's borders and laid wreath of flowers at a war memorial in the local freedom fighter Zila Parishad Bhavan (John Hall) complex on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, Additional Deputy Commissioner recalled that in the Indo-Pak war of 1971, 34 brave soldiers from Gurugram district sacrificed their lives. 

“The country will always remember their sacrifice. The young generation should take inspiration from the sacrifices of these brave sons. Vijay Diwas is a reminder of the sacrifice and struggle of the brave soldiers who were martyred for the country. Today is the day to remember their sacrifices,” he said. 

More than 3,900 Indian soldiers were killed in the 1971 war while 9,851 others were injured. On this day itself, Lieutenant General AAK Niazi, commander of Pakistani forces, surrendered before Eastern Military Commander Lt. Gen. Jagjit Singh Arora along with around 93,000 Pakistani soldiers.

On this occasion, Zila Sainik Board Secretary Wing Commander (Retd) N.C. Sharma, ex-serviceman Colonel Santpal Raghav, Colonel RK Sharma, Captain Ravindra Singh, Subedar Bijendra Singh Thakaran, Subedar Kavar Singh, Subedar Tara Chand, Subedar Satish Kumar, Subedar Ramesh Kumar and Freedom Fighter Heir Committee President Kapoor Singh Dalal laid the wreath and salute the martyrs who sacrificed their lives to protect the unity and integrity of the country.
