New Delhi: The government of Delhi has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state of Himachal Pradesh for sharing of water. It is considered to be very important step considering the prevalent water shortage in Delhi.

As per the MoU, the government of Himachal Pradesh will provide regular daily supply of 368 cusecs from November to February and 268 cusecs from March to June every year.

Further, after creation of the upstream storages, the supply shall be upgraded to 421 cusecs throughout the year. As per information, the water will be delivered at Tajewala to the NCT of Delhi from the date of signing of the MoU.

The Principal Secretary (UD) said that this is path-breaking MoU between Himachal Pradesh and government of NCT of Delhi. “It will greatly ease the pressure on Delhi's scarce water resources and will enable Delhi to meet its demands by using the water optimally.” he said.

Dr RN Batta, Secretary Himachal Pradesh said, “It is a happy occasion for everyone as it's the first time any two states will be signing agreement for selling water. I am grateful to CEO, Delhi Jal Board (DJB) for fast tracking the process and making it a reality today.”

The CEO of DJB, Nikhil Kumar said, “It is indeed a matter of great pride and privilege for me to address the gathering on this historic occasion. In fact, this is the first time two states are coming together and formally entering into an agreement on sharing of precious water resources. Further, this can set a benchmark for other states in the country to come together and try and formalise such agreements where excess and surplus water can be exchanged.”
