Beware of winter chill! It may cause chilblain in fingers and feet

Winter is at peak. The Indian Meteorological Department has declared that the mercury will dip further in the coming days. The winter chill causes lots of health complications.

It’s not only cold and cough, but also many other medical conditions that one needs to guard against. Chilblain is one of them.

Hospitals have already started receiving patients complaining of itching and swelling in fingers which are the symptoms of what’s called as chilblain in medical terminology.

Experts say, “If not treated on time, chilblain can become much severe.”

Hence, if not diagnosed earlier.

Explaining as to how painful chilblain can be if left untreated, a general physician at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Dr. Vijay Gujjar, said house maids who carry out daily household chores and have to dip their hands in chilled water are generally affected by the disease.

“When we experience the chill, we should take care of our hands and feet properly. Blood flow slows down during winter as blood vessels shrink, capillaries veins are very small vein, which carry blood from finger to hearts. But, narrowing vessels disturb the blood circulation and gets shallow,” he elaborated.

If the patient is diabetic, Dr. Vijay Gujjar said it can be harmful because they lose sensation in feet and finger and cannot feel heat and cold. If they are in front of heater or bonfire, it can affect their feet. We should cover our feet and fingers properly, put on socks only after applying coconut oil.
