The Apartment Owner's Association (AOA) of Rishabh Cloud 9, a residential society in Indirapuram, held a session on parenting in the digital age inside the society premises on Sunday.

There was a consensus at the session on the need to evolved different kind of parenting that suits this age of technology.

Councillor for Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Manila Nayal, who conducted the session, stressed the need for communication between parents and children.

She said we need to lower our guard and avoid becoming a control freak while dealing with our wards. Too much strictness to discipline children, she warned could backfire.

Children need a comfortable space to share their issues with their parents. Hence, she said parents should be friendly with them, she averred.

While underscoring the importance of friendly behaviour of parents, Nayal had a piece of advice too. "Keep friendly behaviour with the children, but don't try to become friends. Children need friendly behaviour to communicate openly but if parents become friends to their wards, they would possibly lose authority," Nayal cautioned.

Besides, Nayal also cautioned about the need to control the television and mobile consumption of the children. "It disturbs their routine. Consuming on-screen content just before bed disturbs their (children's) sleep cycle. For better sleep, it is advised to stop watching mobile and television at least an hour before going to bed," she said.

She said parents too should follow the rules themselves for better compliance from the children comply. "Parents also need to restrict their TV and mobile consumption if they wat their wards follow the rule. Follow the philosophy of 'practice what you preach'. If you aren't practising what you are preaching your children, they won't take you seriously," she added.

The event also had a session with the principal of Delhi Public School (DPS), Vasundhara, Trilok Singh Bisht. Bisht conducted a quiz contest for the children on Hindu mythology. He said that the purpose was to connect with the children.

"Today, communication has become vital for personality development as well as to know if a child is having some trouble. We wish to build a bond between children and teachers so that they can share their grievances openly without any hesitation, he said.
