People visiting Greater Noida will no longer have to buy drinking water to quench their thirst. Greater Noida Authority has planned to instal water taps in 100 locations to ensure drinking water is available to people at public places across the city. Survey work for the feasibility of the plan is under way. The Authority will instal separate supply lines for the taps.

The civic body has taken the initiative to address the unavailability of drinking water at public places. It will focus on providing free water to crowded areas such as markets and bus stops.

The pipelines will supply drinking water only and the taps will be constantly monitored to control water wastage. According to the plan, arrangements will be made to ensure that the waste water flows directly into the ground.

Speaking to City Spidey, Deepak Agarwal, CEO, Greater Noida Authority, said that the installation of the water taps was planned on the lines of international cities, where drinking water is made available to the people. "I have already ordered a survey for the entire process," he added.

The initiative has been welcomed by the people of Greater Noida.

Lal Babu, a passenger waiting for his bus at Pari Chowk, told City Spidey that right now one had no option but to buy packaged drinking water. "I commute to Delhi every day for work, and that involves waiting for a bus for a long time on most days. With the mercury soaring, it becomes difficult to stay without buying water. The Authority's initiative will be a boon to daily commuters such as us," added Babu.

Ramesh Kumar, a resident of Greater Noida, said that it was unfair that people had to pay for something as basic as drinking water, especially in summer. "The water taps will provide some respite to people," he added.

Reena Sangwaan, a woman who had come to Jagat Farms Market for shopping, said that the facility should be immediately made available to the public.
