Noida drains will choke no more, bamboo screens to filter out non-degradables

Now, Noida residents will no longer have to unduly bother about overflowing drains or drains flooding in reverse direction. The Noida Industrial Development Authority on Tuesday installed several screens made of bamboo to filter non-degradable waste responsible for choking of drains. 

Updating the residents about the environment-friendly initiative through a social media post, Ritu Maheshwari, Chief Executive Officer of the Noida Authority said the authority had installed the bamboo screens in the stormwater drains at 250 locations. 

This innovative, low-cost and low-maintenance solution helps filter out non-biodegradable waste, mainly plastic, from choking drains and makes it easy to clean the drain.

This idea of filtering the nondegradable waste is expected to reduce the chances of the flood-like situation in the city if the filtered waste is taken out from all points on time. These were the main reasons for blocking the drains in the city. 

Residents of Noida applauded the innovative ideas to filter the waste from these drains in the city with a few more suggestions to be implemented for having a long-lasting solution to the persistent problem. 

Pushkar Chandna, a resident of Noida, said that the authority had finally acted on the suggestions given to them long ago. It should further take this suggestion as on priority basis. 

He said, "Instead of taking out the silt from the drains and putting it on the roadside, they should hire vehicles that not only take out silt but also carry them along." 

“This is cost-effective as well. Currently, the authority appoints contractors to take out the silt and put it beside the drain, which most of the times slips in the same drain if not removed. But, with the new suggestion, this kind of problem would not arise," he added.
