Cold days to century's coldest month, surprises galore for Delhi

Many living in Delhi-NCR may be oblivious about the record the weather is setting, but everyone can feel the vagaries of nature. Most had taken Friday for another chilly day of the season, when disclosed that it was, indeed, the coldest day of the season, many jaws were dropped.

What's more, the month will go down in history as the century's coldest December. Delhi is expected to record its longest cold spell in December after 1997 as temperatures are likely to drop further, the weather department said.

A bare biting cold has been sweeping through the entire region for a few days now building up momentum. Nevertheless, it came as a surprise for many that Friday was the season's coldest day.

The minimum temperature recorded in the National Capital plummeted to 4.2 degrees Celsius while the maximum was 13.4 degrees Celsius, according to a reported of ANI.

Meanwhile, most of the areas of Delhi have experienced as many as 13 consecutive "cold days" since December 14 making the period the longest cold spell after 1997 when it recorded 17 cold days.

Kuldeep Srivastava, head of the India Meteorological Department's regional forecasting centre, was quoted as saying, "A "cold day" is when the maximum temperature is at least 4.5 notches below the normal. A "severe cold day" is when the maximum temperature is at least 6.5 degrees Celsius below the normal."

The weather office said the cold day to severe cold day conditions will continue in the city till December 28, along with dense to very dense fog in night and morning hours.
