Dwarka: 69-year-old retired group captain of Indian Air Force and his 47-year-old wife had no idea what is in store for them when they were returning from a Christmas Party on Wednesday night. They took a cab from the venue of the party to their residence at Air Force and Naval Officers Enclave in Sector 7, Dwarka.

Just when they came out of the cab and were crossing the road to reach their society, a speeding Volkswagen Polo hit them and fled away. A police officer said, “Amardeep Singh Gill was declared dead on arrival at the hospital while Rajani Gill succumbed during treatment on Friday morning.”

As per DCP (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse, the driver of the car was a 20-year-old BBA student who fled the scene after hitting the couple.

“Yatin, a resident of Vikaspuri, was arrested on Thursday, and the car too has been recovered. He has been booked under IPC sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence) at the Dwarka South police station,” said the DCP.

The driver was traced because of the presence of mind of a passerby. When the couple was hit by the car, the passerby noted down the registration number of the car and informed the police about it.

A police officer said that when they checked the registration number, they found that the vehicle belonged to an address at Netaji Subhash Place. Further during the investigation at the said address, the police came to know that the car was sold to an address in Pitampura.

At Pitampura, police were informed that the car was sold to a broker. Yatin, the driver who had hit the couple, was then arrested after the broker informed the police that the car was sold to him.

The deceased couple had two sons and both of them were settled in Canada. They were informed about the deaths.
