Gurugram: To provide better transportation facilities to the commuters, Haryana Transport Minister Moolchand Sharma on Friday launched Kilometer Scheme Bus Service which boasts of Vehicle Tracking System. Initially, five buses have been flagged off from Gurugram.

The launch was done amid the protest by the employees' union who were opposing the scheme citing privatisation of the the roadways. However, it was done while Section 144 was imposed at the bus stand premises.

On the occasion, the Minister Moolchand Sharma said that the State Government is committed to provide proper transport facilities to the people of the State and the arrival of these buses will certainly provide relief to the passengers.

“Under the Kilometer Scheme, 150 buses will soon be running in the first phase. In addition, AC buses and Volvo buses will also be operating through the Transport Department under the KM scheme in due course,” he informed.

Sharma further informed that buses are also being procured by the state government for Haryana Roadways and approval for purchasing 150 mini buses, 20 Volvo buses and 100 ordinary buses have been given and all these buses will be added in the Haryana Roadways fleet before March 31, 2020.

During the inaugural ceremony, he announced that Gurugram will soon get a new bus stand, which will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for which a site has already been earmarked.

While emphasising on the need for better transportation in the state, Sharma said that according to an estimate, about 8 to 10 thousand buses are required in the state. 

“This scheme has been introduced to fill this gap. Buses running under the KM scheme are available at the rate of Rs 26.92 per km and this will provide good transport facilities to the public,” he said.

Additional Chief Secretary, Transport Department SN Rai informed that out of these five buses, two buses will run between Gurugram and Chandigarh, two buses between Gurugram and Jaipur and one bus between Gurugram and Hisar. 

He informed that the decision was taken in view of the high number of passengers on these routes and soon such buses will run on other routes as well. “These buses will be operated through Haryana Roadways and the conductor of the bus will be from the department. Along with diesel and maintenance, all the expenses will be borne by the bus owners,” he said.
