Communities in Dwarka came together on Sunday to pay homage to Nirbhaya, a victim of brutal gangrape in Delhi, on the seventh anniversary of her death.

Known by the nickname she assumed during the countrywide stir following her brutalisation in a deserted city bus where she was subjected to third-degree torture by six rapists, Nirbhaya succumbed to her injuries after battling for life for 13 days.

People were called on the mother of Nibhaya, Asha Devi, at her residence in Akshardham Apartments in Sector 19 here to pay their homage and console her and her family for the loss.

Street play on women's safety

On the occasion, a street play was organised on women's safety in the city. People from various RWAs and social organisations across the city lit candles in her memory on the footpath in front of the gate of the Akshardham Apartments.

Local political leaders like ex-MLA Matiala, Rajesh Gehlot, Leader of the House in the South Delhi Municipal Committee (SDMC), Kamaljeet Sehrawat, and the area  ACP, Rajender Singh, were also present on the occasion.

Rajesh Gehlot,  in his address to the gathering, declared that a community hall would be built in the area in the name of Nirbhaya. He said that the chowk in front of the gate of Akshardham Apartments would be named after Nirbhaya.

A signboard of Nirbhaya was erected at the location by the people. Kamaljeet Sehrawat emphasised on women's safety and empowerment.
