New Delhi: To mitigate air and dust pollution in the city, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is set to undertake an intensive plantation drive to cover all leftover open soil and surface.

In an annual meeting held at NDMC convention centre here, more than 5,000 tree saplings, five lakh shrubs and grass are proposed to cover open area for the year 2020-21

NDMC Chairman Dharmendra said, "We are in revenue surplus this year too. The total revenue receipts from electricity distribution have been projected in 2019-20 at Rs 1411.40 crore.

“We are in a surplus profit of Rs 355 crore.”

Laying emphasis to make the NDMC cleaner and greener, he vowed to continue with his efforts next year as well. The plantation drive, he said would be taken up internally.

Along with tree saplings, the NDMC proposed three new canteens for a better mid-day meal to be distributed in the NDMC area. This will be done in association with Akshaya Patra, a leading best serving mid-day meal NGO.

QR based tree information will continue in the next financial year despite the reservation of some resident fearing QR code might harm the tree.

Dharmendra said “This time around, we will do it in a much better way so that not a single tree is harmed by the QR code. A total of 100 trees will be notified with QR code in Lodhi Garden in the next financial year.

He said 4,000 more types of trees would be covered under the scheme.

The NDMC will completely switch to an e-office system in the first quarter of the financial year.
