SDMC launches integrated waste management system in Najafgarh

New Delhi: In a step towards attaining the target of 100 per cent waste processing, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Friday introduced an integrated waste management system in Najafgarh Zone.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal flagged off auto tippers and mini trucks for the collection and transportation of solid waste. He lauded the SDMC for coming out with an integrated system for collection and transportation of the waste in all its four zones including Najafgarh.

Referring to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the LG stated that the system being launched by the SDMC is in continuation of the parameters fixed under Swachh Bharat mission.

Under the system, the waste would be collected directly from the mohallas and streets through 253 auto tippers and will be segregated at the source itself to reduce the burden on the already saturated landfill sites. 25  fixed compactor transfer stations (FCTS) have already been established in all the wards of Najafgarh zone.

Gyanesh Bharti, SDMC commissioner, said the waste would be transported from FCTS to Waste to Energy/C&D waste plant in a systematic manner. Once the entire system comes into force, there would be no manual handling of solid waste. Advanced vehicles which include 253 Tata ACE tippers, 41 mobile compactors, 25 fixed compactors, 8 hook loaders, 5 Tata 407 silt lifters and 6 bin washing machines have been deployed for transportation of garbage.

The garbage will include dust generated from swiping of roads, garbage from hotels and restaurants and  silt taken out from the drains apart from green waste. Garbage will be collected daily from  residential colonies/commercial establishment including markets.

Personnel involved in this system have been given due training.
