Gurugram: The Haryana Shehari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) is said to have allotted a tender for the installation of streetlights alongside the road near Sector 37 D. With this, decks are cleared to fulfil a long pending demand of the residents of the sector.

According to a reliable source in the HSPV, the work on the installation of streetlights on the 700-metre-long stretch will begin soon.

Residents have been lobbying with the HSVP for the approval of the project for quite some time. They were concerned over the lack of safety and security in the vicinity due to a dark stretch.  They had written to HSVP on Friday drawing its attention to their demand.

The residents had complained that a 60-metre road, which was constructed by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) last year, was lying unlit for the last eight months.

They pointed out that lack of proper lighting is causing inconvenience to thousands of people living in the high-rise societies such as BPTP Park Serene, NBCC Green View etc.

Yadvendra Yadav, a resident of NBCC Green View, said, "This is the only approach road to our society. However, it remained quite unsafe to commute at night, especially for women and senior citizens for long. The foggy weather condition during the ongoing winter has further aggravated the problem.”

He lamented that despite paying huge amount in the form of Infrastructure Development Charge (IDC) and External Development Charge (EDC) the residents are deprived of basic amenities.

The residents claim to have made several reminders to concerned departments but all they got was false assurances.

Expressing his disappointment with authorities apathetic attitude over public safety, Hemant Kumar, a resident of BPTP Park Serene, said, "We had written to GMDA, HSVP officials and even approached former Public Work Department (PWD) Minister Rao Narbir Singh on the matter, but nothing was done. The HSVP officials had inspected the site last year. Yet the problem persisted for so long."

According to the residents, the unilluminated portion is used by antisocial elements as a cover to carry on with their nefarious activities like open drinking, snatching etc.

"Three incidents of chain snatching have been reported from the area in the past," Kumar added.
