Justice for Nirbhaya: Candlelight vigil pays off

Community people of Dwarka have been carrying out regular candlelight marches for justice in Nirbhaya rape and murder case. The news of a Delhi court issuing death warrant against four convicts for January 22, after seven years of trial, came to them as a big relief.

Known by the sobriquet she earned during a nation-wide agitation following the incident, 23-year old Nirbhaya died of the injuries inflicted upon her by her tormentors on December 29, 2012, after battling for life for 13 days.

The candlelight marches were organised in the localities around Sector 19 and all the candles were placed in front of the gate of Akshardham. Residents of Akshardham Apartments led the event on a daily basis.

Besides the community, people from across the city and the National Capital participated in the marches with the mother of the deceased, Asha Devi, in tow.

General secretary of RWA, Akshardham Apartments, Gomti Mattu, said at the launch of the campaign on December 16, 2019, they had pledged to continue the candlelight vigil untill the culprits are hanged.

“It has become a routine with us to take out the march around our societies every day at 8 pm to show solidarity with the victim and raise concern for the safety of women. We wanted the community to break its silence and come forward for the rights of women,” he said.

Eminent personalities joined the march. Yesterday evening  Maninderjeet Singh Bitta, chairman of the All-India Anti-Terrorist Front and former president of Indian Youth Congress also joined the residents and the mother of Nirbhaya in the march. He inspired the community to fight for the right and fight against injustice.
