Delhi polls: Laxmi Nagar residents pitch for infrastructural developments

New Delhi: After the Election Commission of India (EC) fixed the date for Delhi Assembly polls on February 8, local politicians have started reaching out to the residents aiming to get early edge. People, living in Laxmi Nagar constituency, are demanding infrastructural developments required to make the narrow lanes walkable in future.

Laxmi Nagar is known for its narrow lanes, crumbling infrastructure, irregular construction. This time, the residents have high hopes that their colonies would be given a better infrastructures.

The constituency, popularly known as a hub for imparting education for Chartered Accountancy (CA) course, has a heterogeneous population which is over one lakh. Many students visit the area to take coaching classes and also live in rented rooms at very high prices.

The constituency lacks basic amenities like drinking water, sewer lines and parking space. Illegal construction is another headache in the area. In last Delhi Assembly elections in 2015, people of the constituency had elected Aam Aadmi Party’s Nitin Tyagi and sent him to the Assembly.

Poor civic amenities, traffic jams, garbage dumped along the roads, poor sanitation have been a burning issue not only in Laxmi Nagar but in entire East Delhi. Dilip Sharma, a resident said, “Lack of parking space is biggest challenge for us. People have bought cars but they do not have space for parking.”

“People face acute water shortage here. Also the lanes are extremely narrow here. Recently one building collapsed at Lalita Park. The entire area is earthquake-prone. Therefore the government needs to think about these issues seriously,” Sharma added.

According to the people in the area, the constituency needs better infrastructure, drinking water and better traffic regularisation. People say that brawls breakout due to lack of parking space. They also say that coaching centres have mushroomed in illegally constructed buildings that lack proper fire safety measures.
