Gurugram: Work on the rejuvenation of 15 water bodies in the district is in the full swing and is likely to complete soon. Once the water bodies are ready, 40,000 litres of water can be augmented daily to recharge 10,000 litres of groundwater.

The project is being carried out under the Gurujal Project launched last year to enhance the depleting groundwater level and create mass awareness about water conservation.

On Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner Amit Khatri, chaired a meeting with the officials of the Gurujal project to discuss ways to improve groundwater and accelerate the rejuvenation process of the water bodies selected under the project.

Officials of concerned departments attended the meeting and expressed their views on the subject.

Around 318 awareness campaigns, 125 of them involving schools, 39 focused workshops and six community mobilisation programmes are being organised besides several meetings with resident welfare associations (RWA) in the city.

“As per the data,” Shubhi Kesarwani, the project director of the Gurujal project, said, “300 illegally running borewells in the district have been sealed by various departments so far.

Out of the 572 government-run schools, 128 have rainwater harvesting (RWH) system in an operational condition while 22 RWH systems are under construction while 398 schools are required to install the system.

The five major roads, including Sadar Bazar, South City-1, Sushant Lok, Chema Road and Mount Olympus School Road, are to be made user-friendly model roads.

Under the Gurujal Project, 300 ponds in the district have been earmarked for restoration and rejuvenation work. In the first phase, work on 30 ponds are underway.

Along with the rejuvenation of the water bodies, large-scale afforestation will be carried out in the area around them to provide a place of recreational activities for the residents living in the locality amidst the clean environment.

She informed that 19 ponds in 13 villages of the municipal corporation area have also been included under the project, whose rejuvenation work will start soon.

Additional Deputy Commissioner, Prashant Panwar, who was present in the meeting, said that testing of soil and water is going on for the rejuvenation of the ponds.

While directing the Gurujal team to ensure completion of the work in phases, Deputy Commissioner Amit Khatri said that the nodal departments should consider their responsibility towards this project and give their support to make it a success. If all the departments work together, the target set under this project can be achieved soon.

Laying emphasis on the maintenance after these water bodies ready, DC Khari said it was necessary to make people aware of the conservation of water and maintain cleanliness around the ponds.
