Gurugram: The Gurugram Traffic Police, on Tuesday, issued as many as 286 challans to errant motorists on a single day. The police action was part of a special drive carried out to check rash and negligent driving. 

The traffic police launched the drive after receiving a number of complaints by the residents. The challans issued were mainly for wrong-side driving and skipping the red light at 28 major intersections of the city.

The traffic police issued 209 challans at 26 intersections for wrong-side driving while it issued 78 challans at 28 junctions in case of jumping the red light and impounded two vehicles during the drive. 

In the day-long drive, the highest number of challans were issued at Mata Mandir Road junction where 27 violaters were fined for the wrong-side driving followed by Apparel House junction and Rajeev Chowk to Medanta Road junction stretch where 23 challans each for the similar offence. 

Apart from these, Sapphire Mall, Nathupur, Genpect Chowk to IBIS Hotel are among other intersections where wrong-side driving was recorded maximum.

The action came after the traffic police received several complaints and feedback from the public.

Wrong-side driving is among the major causes of concern for road safety in the city. In an attempt to save time and fuel, many motorists drive on the wrong-side of the road posing a serious threat to their lives as well as fellow commuters.
