New Delhi: Delhi is all set to go to polls on February 8 to elect its new state assembly. This time, the National Capital will see a rise of more than 21,000 voters aged 80 and above.
The total number of the octogenarian voters has crossed the 2-lakh mark this year from last year’s which was around 1.8 lakh. According to the data of the Delhi CEO’s office, this year, there are 2,05,035 octogenarian voters while last year they there were 1,83,579 such voters.
The five constituencies that have the largest 80-plus voters are Greater Kailash (6,349), Vishwas Nagar (5,910), Matiala (4,963), Malviya Nagar (4,798) and Janakpuri (4,739). The five constituencies with the least number of octogenarian voters are Badli (697), Delhi Cantt (843), Sangam Vihar (971), Tughlakabad (1,050) and Kondli (1,376).
Out of a total of 70 Assembly constituencies, 66 constituencies saw increase in the number of octogenarian voters. Vishwas Nagar has recorded the highest rise in the number of such voters where 716 octogenarians added to the list since last year.
This year, the administration is well-equipped to facilitate these elderly voters. They can cast their vote through postal ballot introduced for the first time. Until now, those on election duty could cast their vote through postal ballot.
Apart from this, other facilities to be provided by the CEO office to the elderly include pick and drop facility and a provision of wheelchair and ramp at the polling stations.
