Dwarka’s fatal turn

A sudden, sharp U-turn in front of the DDA Pocket 1 gate of Sector 9 has become a huge danger for speeding vehicles, which often ram into the footpath-end at the bend.

Dwarka’s fatal turn

A turn near the DDA SFS flats in Sector 9, Pocket 1, Dwarka, has turned into an accident-prone zone, with speeding vehicles often ramming into the footpath around a sharp U-turn in front of the DDA pocket gate.

The accidents happen mostly in the late-night or early-morning hours, when light is low. Recently, a car rammed into a footpath and ran over it completely. Subhash Chandra, secretary of the RWA of the pocket, says, “Such accidents are common at this turn. Fatal accidents, too, have happened in the past. I have been living here since 2004, and have witnessed such accidents quite frequently.”

Some feel that cars usually approach the master plan road 202 at high speeds, and then are suddenly faced with a sharp turn near the DDA pocket, often leading to accidents. Chandra elaborates, “High speed is definitely one reason — sometimes those at the wheel are drunk.  Cars usually notice a clear passage while coming from the Ganpati Chowk traffic signal. But the sudden turn at high speeds leads vehicles to collide with the footpath.” He further adds, “A few months back, blinkers and reflectors were placed there to make the drivers aware of the sharp turn, but the blinkers have been damaged due to frequent accidents.”

The RWA has approached the area MLA, Col Devender Sherawat, and requested him to write to the DCP (Traffic) to place a barricade near the sharp turn to allow speeding vehicles to slow down. Sherawat has written to the DCP (Traffic), but no action has been taken yet.
