Gurugram: The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) organised a city chapter meet under Swachh Survekshan 2020 for the '#ILiveSimply Movement' at John Hall.

The movement has been launched by Sonam Wangchuk of the Himalayan Institute of Alternate Living in collaboration with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi as a step to contribute towards adoption of sustainable practices.

The event saw huge participation from people across various sectors, from civil societies, corporates to NGOs.

The movement calls for a shift to a more sustainable lifestyle.

Manish Adlakha from the Himalayan Institute of Alternative Learning was the guest of honour for the occasion. He spoke about the #ilivesimply movement and urged people to participate in it in a big way. He invoked Mahatma Gandhi's ideals with his famous quote "Live simply so that others can simply live".

A short video of Sonam Wangchuk briefing about the movement was also shown at the meet. Shubra Puri from Gurgaon First moderated a panel discussion on Sustainable Lifestyle Choices.

During the discussion, Manish said one hour of Netflix streaming is equivalent to $80 saving on carbon footprint and people living in cities should become more aware of their practices.

In the panel discussion, Sameera Satija said that there was a need to make Swachhta campaign look more appealing by giving it a more contemporary look and feel to suit the youth.

Another panellist, Jyoti, drew attention to Ghazipur landfill plan, how it is going to help solve sanitary problems. Rajiv lauded the efforts of young climate activist Greta Thunberg towards spreading awareness about environment protection. He quoted her saying she wasted her 17 years of existence.

Representing the MCG at the meet, Sonia Duhan informed that over the last one month, the civic body had been organising and conducting informative, educational and interactive activities to spread awareness on waste management under the ambit of Swachh Survekshan.

"Activities like polling to understand citizens' awareness level about waste disposal, clothing and e-waste collection drive, Raahgiri and musical flash mobs were conducted in the last one month," she pointed out.

"Climate change has prompted to find measures to reduce and manage the waste. Gurgaon generates 1400-1500 metric tonne waste every day and 90% of the plastic waste is not recycled," she said.

The session ended with people taking a pledge to protect the environment and urging everyone to make a small change in their lifestyle to make the world a better place to live in for the future generation.
