E-commerce giants need to find way to dispose plastic waste: CPCB to NGT

New Delhi: The Central Pollution Control Board on Tuesday told the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that the e-commerce giants will have to fulfill the responsibility to dispose the plastic waste generated due to packaging of their products.

It said that the companies like Amazon and Flipkart should adhere to the rules devised in Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016.

The apex pollution mornitoring body referred to the provisions 9(2) of the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, which said, “Primary responsibility for collection of used multi-layered plastic sachet or pouches or packaging is of Producers, Importers and Brand Owners who introduce the products in the market.”

A plea was filed by a 16-year-old boy at tribunal requesting to intervene in checking excessive use of plastic in the packaging of products.

“The e-commerce companies are covered under the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016. But due to a lack of monitoring and implementation, the respondents continue to use excessive amounts of plastic in wrapping and packaging their sold items,” said the plea.

On the other hand, Amazon India said that it has been relentlessly working to find ways to reduce use of single-use plastic in the supply-chain. It said that efforts are on to eliminate its usage at their premises by June 2020.

Flipkart said, “We have been constantly striving to find eco-friendly alternatives for plastic packaging which is resilient and keeps the product safe during transit.”
