Gurugram: District admin launches campaign to facilitate organ donation

Gurugram: To address the common issue of lack of organs required for transplants, the district administration has launched a campaign to facilitate organ donation in Gurugram.

A mass awareness drive, ‘Donate Organ, Save Lives’, will be carried out to motivate the citizens to take a voluntary pledge for organ donation and also dispel myths and misgivings among the people about organ donation.

Keeping this in view, the district administration will also seek support from various organisations including NGOs, private hospitals and senior officials of health department.

According to a study, around 10,000 organs are required every year to save the lives in the state. It was also found that only 5 per cent of the people donate the organ. This is among one of the most ambitious campaigns of the Haryana Chief Minister, Manohar Lal Khattar. The campaign will be monitored by the Chief Minister's Office.

According to Deputy Commissioner Amit Khatri, the campaign will also work towards removing the misconceptions about organ donation among the people. For this purpose, IEC i.e. Information, Education and Communication Plan will be launched soon.

According to a data, about 36,000 people need organ transplant in the state. Every year, 1.8 lakh people die in road accidents in the state, out of which, 6,000 people die after being declared brain dead. According to a study, the lives of 6 people can be saved from one person's body parts.

“Had the people been aware about organ donation, many lives could have been saved,” said Khatri.

Notably, in order to spread the importance of organ donation in Haryana, the project is being started in a pilot manner in four districts of the state including Gurugram, Faridabad, Rohtak and Panchkula. After its success in these districts, it will be implemented in other districts of the state.
