Four months on, Krishna Nagar’s Lal Quarter market remains no-vehicle zone

New Delhi: Lal Quarter market of Krishna Nagar has successfully completed more than four months with no-vehicle zone tag. Resident Welfare Associations (RWA) and market associations here are looking at it as a victory over traffic jams.

Their next move can be painting of the roads and illuminating pavement.

Residents and traders of the area not only supported but also cooperated in the success of the move adopted on a trial basis in September last. From December onwards, a stretch of four kilometers remained completely no-vehicle zone.

Visitors to the market park their vehicles at a parking 1.5 km away from main bazar. Delhi traffic police also coordinate with the movement. The traffic police placed barriers to prevent vehicles from entering the main market.

A resident of Krishna Nagar, Raj Pillai, said it was not easy to adopt a good habit. When people are habitual of parking their vehicles here and there, it’s difficult to convince them not to do so. But now, the market seems beautiful in the evening when we can see people moving around and indulge in hassle-free shopping.

Sandeep Kapoor, a member of East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) standing committee, who actively worked for the cause, said, “We are focusing on beautification of the market in our next meeting. Old stamp poles can be replaced with more bright lights in the coming months.”
