GB Nagar placed under Section 144 in the wake of board exams

GB Nagar: Authorities have imposed Section 144 in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar for two months in order to maintain peace during the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) board exams for Class 10 and 12.

Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) bars gathering of more than four people. The move comes in the wake of protest by farmers and several social outfits.

A circular was shared by additional DCP (law and order) Ashutosh Dwiwedi which says that the decision had been taken in view of the protest and rallies for the past few weeks. It justified the imposition of Section 144 as a necessity since it was impossible to identify anti-social elements.

The circular stated that no rallies or protest can be organised without the permission from the authority concerned and no loudspeakers can be used during this period. It specified that people should circulate videos and messages on social media with caution.

Ban on celebratory firing and consuming liquor in public places has also been enforced.

However, this restriction will not be applicable to students taking examinations, funeral processions, wedding parties and religious gatherings, the order stated.

Police have got orders to immediately arrest those found making public speeches that can hurt the sentiments of a particular community.

“Those found violating the norms made in the circular will booked under Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) and may also face imprisonment along with a fine,” said the circular.

Police have also warned people to avoid using mud or colours harmful to others during Holi next month.

“There will not be Holi bonfires on any new sites. The rituals will take place only at the traditional spots in the district. Nobody will carry out prayers or namaz at any disputed property where there has been no tradition of prayers,” the order stated.
