Gurugram: The fourth edition of Khel Yatra was held at Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Gurugram on Saturday amid sporting spirit and feverish fervour.
The annual sporting event witnessed participation of more than 300 underprivileged kids from 22 NGO based schools.
Boys and girls aged between 7 and 18 years participated in 100m and 200m sprints as well as in relay and long jump.
The event serves as a platform for budding athletes to represent their states and an opportunity for talent hunt.
This year, the event was organised by Shiv Kapoor, Sanaya Varma, Nilay Solanki and Alaa Bouzrati, all students of Class 11 of American Embassy School (AES), New Delhi.
Vidya School Gurugram, Saksham Bal Vikas Sanstha and Disha School emerged top three in the competition.
There were some outstanding individual performances too at the games. 13-year-old Suman Mohapatra of Naya Savera completed 200m race in 24.41 seconds in under-14 category.
During conclusion of the event, 17-year-old, Shiv Kapoor, said, “Even though I have been a part of the organising team for the fourth time, the thrill and satisfaction that I get watching these children play never reduces.”
Speaking about the event, 16-year-old Sanaya Varma said, "Few years ago many participants did not even have proper footwear to run. Some used to run barefoot. Therefore, this year we decided to give all of them a pair of shoes.”
Echoing the same sentiments, 16-year-old Nilay Solanki said that he had volunteered for the event last year and was greatly moved by the happiness and excitement of the participants.
According to the organizers, Khel Yatra is an annual event fully organised by the students of the American Embassy School in order to share their experiences that has helped shape them as human beings. The event helps in building confidence among the underprivileged kids and give an opportunity to them to exhibit their talent in front of the coaches and officials of the sports department.
