Noida: Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Admiral Karambir Singh on Saturday unveiled a model of INS Chennai at Shaheed Smarak in Sector 37 here. The model of Kolkata-class stealth guided-missile destroyer of the Indian Navy was donated by the Indian Navy. 

Admiral Singh, who was the chief guest on the occasion, was received by the chairman of Shaheed Smarak Santha, Lt Gen GL Bakshi, and its executive director, Lt Gen SK Singh. 

The guided-missile destroyer was commissioned in Indian Navy on 21 November 2016. The vessel's anti-submarine warfare capabilities include indigenously developed rocket and torpedo launchers. Besides, it is equipped to fight under nuclear, biological and chemical warfare conditions.

Before unveiling the model, Singh paid homage to the 38 martyrs at the event of 19 Annual Wreath Laying ceremony held at Shaheed Smarak. 

Prominent officials of  the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force such as Maj Gen VK Mishra, AVSM, GoC, Delhi Area; Maj Gen SS Suhag, ADG (EME) and Air Vice-Marshal Vikram Singh, VSM, ACAS(Plans) along with others also followed the admiral.

The martyrs' family members were also asked to lay a wreath for their beloved ones.

An ex-Naval officer Cdr Narendra Mahajan, described the ceremony as “colourful” echoing the sentiment of all those present on the occasion. The eyes of families of martyrs were moist with tears when the heroic stories of their beloved ones were recounted.

The ‘Noida Shaheed Smarak’ (NSS) is a unique Tri-servicee memorial raised by the Noida township to keep the memories and spirit of our martyrs alive. The idea of setting up such a War Memorial to honour Martyrs was conceived in 1998. Every year, NSS Sanstha organises Annual Wreath Laying Ceremony on February to pay homage to our Martyrs.

After the wreath-laying ceremony, a tri-service guard band's performance mesmerised the audience. The choir group of Army Public School gave a scintillating performance was applauded by everyone.
