Greater Noida (west): A group of residents from Gaur City 1 and 2 spent their Sunday in a plantation drive. The major attraction of the drive was the residents’ enthusiasm to not just plant a sapling but also to ensure its protection.

With this objective in mind, the volunteers erected a tree guard for every seed they sowed. Sanwarjeet Dasoundi, a volunteer of Greno Green Foundation. told CitySpidey that while 300 saplings and machinery (driller) to fit the gauge were bought from contribution, tree guards were provided by the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) on request.

Till 3 pm, the residents from Gaur City’s 12th avenue, 5th avenue and tenth avenue planted some 200 saplings along with a steel guard to protect it from being mowed by vehicles and/or being destroyed or eaten up by stray animals.

“We covered a stretch of 2 km today,” exclaimed the excited volunteers.

The GreNo Green Foundation and coordinators from the avenues – Gautam and Saurabh Vikash (GC 10), Sarvesh Gupta and Deepak Shastri (GC 5), Aditi Mukherjee (GC 12) and Sanwarjeet Singh ( Gaur Sportswood) – have worked tirelessly for months to create awareness about the importance of trees in the area.

One of the volunteers said, “We chose to plant Pilkhan and Maulshree saplings as we reached to a conclusion, through our past drives in the area, that these plants have a greater survival expectancy in this region.

During the event, a few children were also seen holding aloft hand-made banners. Parents of Nisham and Rudransh told this reporter that last night the children had been prepping for the plantation drive.

The GNIDA has sanctioned 450 tree guards to the foundation out of which they have received 200 so far.
