New Delhi: Doctors of Confederation of Medical Associations in Asia and Oceania (CMAAO) have rejected the claims which are doing rounds on social media that eating chicken makes you vulnerable to infection from COVID-19 virus.
Coronaviruses are respiratory viruses and can spread only by respiratory secretions of animals or humans.
COVID-19 virus has been linked to respiratory secretions of bats in China but no other animals are yet found responsible for spreading it. Those who even drink bat juices cannot get it. Only bat handlers can get it from bat’s infected secretions.
CDC (Disease Control and prevention) WHO (World health Organization), CMAAO, IMA (Indian Medical Association) and HCFI (Health care foundation of India ) recommended only standard meat precautions for prevention of food-borne diseases.
These do not include handling raw meat and eating meat after proper cooking throughout the year.
The present myth may affect the poultry industry with direct and indirect employment to 19 million people. Twelve per cent agriculture farmers are also dependent on this industry.
The rates of chicken and meat fell down sharply due to infectious disease. Ghanshyam, a wholesaler of meat said, “We could see demand of chicken dropping by 40 per cent from January to February. This may be because of precaution that people are taking. We are selling chicken at Rs 35 per kg in Ghazipur Murga Mandi.”
