Corona: GB Nagar DM invokes Gangster Act against rumour-mongering

Noida: District Magistrate BN Singh said those found guilty of spreading rumours about coronavirus can be booked under the Gangster Act.

Situation arising from the virus threat in Delhi-NCR has been quite tense since March 1 when the Health Ministry confirmed a positive coronavirus case in Delhi. The panic reached Noida after it came to the knowledge that the child of the person affected with the virus is a student of a school in Noida.

The school is closed for two days as a precautionary measure along with another school in the city which opted to follow suite.

At a press conference on Tuesday, the DM confirmed that the situation was under control and that the district is fully equipped to deal with any eventuality with all the facilities required.

The administration has also confirmed that no case of positive coronovirus has been reported in the district as yet. Singh also requested the media fraternity to refrain from spreading unverified information which might create panic in the district.

Under a provision in Uttar Pradesh Gangster Act, a case can be registered if panic is created in public, Singh told a prominent media organisation. He said that Noida has the new commissionerate system and he will ask the police to treat such cases of rumour-mongering under the Gangster Act.
