New Delhi: The Federation of Residents Doctors' Association (FORDA) demanded risk hazard allowance from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. In a reminder to the ministry, the FORDA called for consideration of its demand on an urgent basis.
The demand for the risk hazard allowance was made in writing in January on behalf of doctor's fraternity when the doctors had become the target of assaults while treating patients all over the country.
FORDA President Dr Shivaji Dev Burman called it a second reminder to the ministry for an allowance, provision of an adequate of quantity of masks and other personal protective equipment (PPE ) for doctors in healthcare institutions in the view of ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19 ) outbreak.
He pointed out that protecting the health and safety of doctors is crucial for the maintenance of an adequate and functional workplace. The world has witnessed various infectious diseases like Ebola, Swine flu, Zika, Nipah and the current outbreak of coronavirus.
These outbreaks, he said have also caused morbidity and even mortalities among healthcare professionals. Doctors too are at high risk of exposure to common infections like TB, HIV, Hepatitis, typhoid and others. Doctors also face violence at the workplace leading to considerable physical and mental trauma.
On January 31, the FORDA submitted the very first reminder regarding risk hazard allowance for doctors and certain other demands for PPE.
"We have not got any positive response as yet, lamented Dr Burman, adding, “Doctors are facing shortage of essential equipment to protect themselves while treating patients. Acute shortage of masks in government hospitals is reported. The FORDA demands immediate action in this regard.”
