Dwarka: In an empathetic gesture specially when summer is just around the corner, over 100 residents of Dwarka came together at Bharat Vandana Park to create a small water storage for the birds and animals. The residents dugged a space and filled it with potable water.
A resident and environment activist, Diwan Singh said that this was need of the hour as mammals and birds were forced to drink from nearby sewage drain during summer.
As per Singh, the residents assembled together for a noble cause to protect the biodiversity which is at risk due to proposal of Delhi Development Authority to turn the area into an amusement park.
The proposed park is based on the model of ancient Harappan cities As per the proposal, the park will offer recreational activities and also will be serving the artists.
The project was announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri in December last year. Puri said, “The residents want this area to be developed as biodiversity park like the Aravali biodiversity park in Vasant Vihar.”
The park has many species such as neelgai, peacocks, monitor lizard, Indian hare, flapshell turtle, jackals and 70 types of birds.
Sumit Dookia, a wildlife biologist said, “As more than 1,000 flights take off from the nearby Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI Airport), it affects the air quality in the area which is not conducive to the habitat. So, coverting a green area into amusement park is not a good idea. It will affect the people of Dwarka.”
A resident of Sector 7, Anurag Bahal said, “Air pollution is not only concern. The existing wildlife would vanish with the human intervention which would come with the amusement park. The residents have decided to approach the minister Hardeep Singh Puri.”
