New Delhi: Thousands of doctors voted and elected their representatives for the Delhi Medical Council. This time around, over 7,000 doctors exercised their franchise and voted members of their choice for the council.

In all 45 candidates contested for the eight-member panel. The polling saw youngsters, first time voters and stalwarts of the medical profession standing together in queues to exercise their democratic right. The voting went on for an hour. 

The doctors looked forward to constitute a council which would create an ethical environment to practice and provide them security both physical and mental from the rising cases of assaults. Their main concern was their protection and curb on medical negligence. 

Dr Harish Gupta and Dr Prem Aggarwal bagged the maximum number of votes. Dr Pankaj Solanki, Former FORDA President, stood third. The representative body of the government hospital RDAs, who was contesting the first time and is now going to be the youngest member of the council.

" We thank all the doctors who came and voted today in large numbers. Never in the history of Delhi Medical Council has there been such a record participation. We were extremely delighted to see thousands of young doctors and first time voters coming to exercise their rights,” said Dr Prem Aggarwal, leading cardiologist and MD Sanjeevan Hospital.

"It is evident from their participation and our interaction with them that doctors are concerned about their protection against legal hassles and the rising violence which is now seen in both the government and private hospitals. As was our motto of Team Suraksha, we are going to fight for doctors' protection and ensure a safe and ethical environment for doctors in Delhi,” Dr Aggarwal added. 

Delhi Medical Council is a statutory body under the Delhi Medical Council Act, 1997 and is vested with powers, duties and function of regulating the practice of Modern Scientific System of Medicine in the NCT of Delhi.
