New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has decided to suspend its services on Sunday as a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘janata curfew’, which will be observed on March 22.

"In the wake of 'Janata Curfew' to be observed this Sunday i.e, on 22nd March 2020, DMRC has decided to keep its services closed. The move is aimed at encouraging public to stay indoors and maintain social distancing, which is essential in the fight against Covid-19," the DMRC tweeted.

In a special address to the nation on Thursday evening, Modi said that janta curfew would be observed across the country on Sunday from 7am to 9pm. He said that the curfew would help people to acquaint with self isolation and prepare them for the coming hardships.

"Under this Janata (public) curfew, no one should leave their home or gather in their neighbourhoods. Only those related to essential services should go out," said PM Modi.

He further said that at 5 pm on Sunday people would stand in their balconies, windows or doors and would clap or clank utensils to applaud those maintaining essential services.

He urged people to stay indoors as much as possible and cut down on non-essential travel. The prime minister also urged senior citizens above the age of 60 years who have weaker immune system to not step out of their homes.
