Portion of basements at Gardenia Gateway caves in; developer in the dock

Noida: A team of senior officers of Noida Industrial Development Authority on Saturday conducted an inspection of a site in Sector 75 where a major portion of two under-construction basements of Gardenia Gateway, a highrise, suddenly collapsed a day ago.

According to the residents of the sector, the officials reached the site for the inspection around 10:30 am. A swimming pool was being developed on the portion of the basements that collapsed.

They said they have taken pictures of the collapse site and noted the faults in the construction of the structure that could have led to the collapse. The officials would now prepare a detailed report in the matter to be presented before the authority.

D Kumar is a vigilante resident who, along with many residents, has been taking up the civic issues with the developers and concerned officers. He says the team came to inspect the site on their complaint.

After the inspection, the officials are convinced that the developers had used sub-standard material, lest the structure would not have collapsed.

One of them squarely blamed poor-quality construction for the collapse. He said officers from all concerned departments such as planning, civil and technical etc. were present while the inspection was in progress.

Residents too believe that the developers did not use quality cement. Beams of the basements were not strong enough to support the basement and hence came crashing down like nine pins.

The residents said as the developer failed to use quality material, they laid thick layers of soil on their own. The structure, they suspect might have collapsed under the weight of the soil.

''The incident would not have happened had the developers made strong beams for these the basements. They are now dangerous for all as the remaining portion of basements can come down any time,'' said one of the residents.
