Dwarka: To protest against cutting of trees along road number 226 for a project of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), about hundred people from nearby societies gathered at the signal of Sector 22/23 on Saturday morning.
They assembled near the Paramount School in Sector 23 and Sadbhavna Apartments in Sector 22. They formed a chain to express their view on the subject.
Holding placards and banners, they shouted slogans against NHAI and expressed their anger and unhappiness about the cutting of trees. They said that residents were not taken into concern before taking the decision to cut the trees.
President of Federation of CGHS, Dwarka, Sudha Sinha said, “Our federation is against any such development in which thousands of trees would be cut. Here, a flyover would be constructed. There are more than 200 trees along the road number 226. We can’t tolerate their cutting. NHAI needs to rethink the project and get an alternative route for this. Our protest would continue.”
On the occasion, people belonging to organisations like Dwarka Bachao Abhiyan and Sukh Dukh Ke Sathi participated in the protest. Members of the managing committee of the societies and environment lovers also protested at the site and expressed their concern to protect the trees.
Dr Asha Sharma, Convenor of Dwarka Bachao Abhiyan said that no project would be allowed by the residents in the area at the cost of the environment.
Diwan Singh, environment activist from Dwarka Bachao Abhiyan said, “We gathered against the government’s misadventure to construct a flyover in the middle of sectors 22 and 23. It would not just become a traffic and pollution nightmare but also lead to the cutting of hundreds of trees.”
“No permission has been taken from the forest department of Delhi for cutting of trees. This flyover has been an afterthought project of NHAI and a disregard and contempt of the lawful rights of local residents. No consultation was ever done with local residents,” he added.
