Coronavirus: Astounding turnaround in Delhi; daily new cases lowest in 35 days

New Delhi: Delhi continued to throw encouraging figures with significant decline in daily number of coronavirus cases and active cases on Monday. On the other side, the recoveries continued to grow as it has been since the start of July.

On Monday, Delhi reported 1,246 new coronavirus cases which is the lowest in the past 35 days. The total number of cases in Delhi now stands at 1,13,740. The arrest in the figures of fresh cases can be validated from the fact that it remained below 2,000 mark for the third day in a row. 

In the last three days, the number of cases has been dipping quite remarkably. The number of new cases was 1,781 on July 11 and 1,573 on July 12. A turnaround has happened since June 23 when Delhi had recorded 3,947 new cases. 

Around June 23, the coronavirus situation was scary in the national capital. The number of cases was growing by nearly 6 per cent on a daily basis making Delhi the fastest growing city in the country. The growth rate has now come down 1.7 per cent.

The active cases have now come down to 19,017. On Sunday, there were 19,155 active cases. It was 19,895 on Saturday. 

It resulted in an increase in the number of vacant beds which were reserved for coronavirus patients at the hospitals. As per the Delhi Corona App, only 28 per cent of beds are occupied in Delhi. The occupancy is 4,229 out of 15,359 beds reserved in the hospitals. 7,069 beds are vacant out of 9,217 beds in the dedicated Covid care centres. 

The recovery figures are also encouraging in the national capital. The recovery rate has now gone past 80 per cent, way above the national recovery rate of around 63 per cent. On Monday, 1,344 patients recovered from the disease taking the total recovery figure to 91,312. 

The heartening aspect is that the number of recoveries has exceeded the number of daily cases on most of the days in July so far. Except July 1 and 6, there have been more recoveries than fresh cases on all the other days.

On the other hand, a plasma bank will be inaugurated at Lok Nayak Hospital by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday. It will become the second plasma bank in the national capital. Plasma therapy is considered effective to cure the Covid patients.
