DMRC plans use of debit, credit cards for fare payment at exit gates

New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is planning to make travel hassle-free for passengers by allowing use of debit and credit cards for deducting the fare at the Automatic Fare Collection System (AFCS).

The AFCS will be upgraded to read the debit and credit cards. The users will be able to directly pay the fare from their debit and credit cards for the distance they travel.

As per a report published in Hindi national daily Hindustan, the DMRC will start the trial for collecting fare from debit and credit cards soon. The trial will start in December this year at the Airport Express line of Delhi Metro.

When the new system is launched, the users will save their time as they will not be required to recharge the smart card frequently. The debit and credit cards will act as smart cards and the fare will automatically be deducted at the exit stations.

All the cards which are Rupay, Visa and Mastercard compliant can be used as a smart card. Cards of any bank can be used for this purpose. The DMRC has started to upgrade 600 AFC gates.

The operations of Delhi Metro have been closed for the public since March 22 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
