New Delhi: The continuous rise in daily new cases failed to cease as nearly 3,000 cases were recorded in Delhi on Friday. It was the highest single-day spike in 69 days. With 2,914 new cases, the cumulative tally has reached 1,85,220.
This was the fourth consecutive day when over 2,000 cases have been recorded in Delhi. 2,737 cases were reported on Thursday, while 2,509 and 2,312 cases were recorded on Wednesday and Tuesday respectively. On June 23, the city had recorded its highest single-day spike of 3,947.
With 13 fatalities, the death toll reached 4,513 in the last 24 hours.
The new cases again outnumbered the recoveries by a significant margin, which was not the case earlier. It has affected the active cases in the national capital. Active cases are rising significantly in the last few days.
1,751 patients recovered from the deadly disease on Friday. A total of 1,61,865 patients have recovered in the national capital so far. The recovery rate further declined to 87. 39 from 87.82 per cent on the previous day.
The active cases increased by 1,150 in the national capital. This was the second consecutive day when active cases rose by more than 1,000. Delhi has now 18,842 active cases. It had dropped below 10,000 mark before the cases started surging again.
32,834 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours. The testing has been ramped up after the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that the testing would be doubled to 40,000 tests per day.
As the number of new cases have risen continuously on a daily basis, many have started to fear a second wave in the national capital. But the Health Minister Satyendar Jain had a contrary view on the matter earlier. He had said that the current rise in cases cannot be called a second wave.
However, CM Kejriwal on Saturday said the coronavirus situation is under control in Delhi at the moment and the recent rise in the number of cases has happened due to an increase in the number of tests.
“The numbers of new cases are rising because more and more tests are being done every day. The more we test, the more we find out about cases. In a way, we have launched a counter-attack on coronavirus,” he said.
Thwarting the rising voices against the claims of success in controlling the coronavirus situation by the Delhi government, he said that the fatality rate due to the coronavirus is better than the national average.
“In June, the deaths were more than 100. Today, it has come down to 13. From August, if you compare the national average fatality rate of 1.7 per cent, the Delhi figures are better at 1 per cent. So, only 1 in every 100 people die,” he said.
