New Covid cases witness big spike indicating possibility of second wave in Delhi

New Delhi: After witnessing a sudden drop in new cases after a 7-day rise on the previous day, new cases started spiking again with 3,609 cases on Tuesday. Barring Monday, the new cases continued to better the last recorded figure in the last nine days. It shows that the national capital is again getting into the grip of coronavirus.

Also, the sudden drop in new cases recorded on Monday was due to considerable drop in the number of tests on that particular day. In comparison to 45,797 tests conducted on Tuesday, only 22,954 tests were conducted on Monday.

Amid such a scenario, the much talked about second wave is very much into reckoning if the figures of the last nine days come into picture. The figures showed that the new cases have grown with the increase in numbers of tests. This indicates persistent rise without any significant abatement.

The situation worsened on most of the parameters. The new cases have been continuously outnumbering the recoveries by significant margins. It affected the active cases figures adversely. Active cases had once gone below 10,000 mark in the national capital. But it is now above 22,000 mark.

It is the eighth consecutive day when over 2,000 cases have been recorded in Delhi. On June 23, the city had recorded its highest single-day spike of 3,947. The figure, reported on Tuesday, was quite close to the highest single-day spike ever recorded.

A total of 1,756 people recovered from the deadly disease in the last 24 hours, taking the figure of total recoveries to 1,70,140. Active cases increased by 1,834 on Tuesday. Now, Delhi has 22,377 active cases. Barring Monday, the active cases had increased by more than 1,000 in the six days.

Meanwhile, with 19 fatalities, the death toll has now reached 4,599 in the national capital.

Taking no chances with recurring of new cases in the national capital, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has ramped up testing. He had earlier said that the testing would be increased to 40,000 per day. He has now announced that a prescription from the doctor is no longer needed to go for coronavirus tests in the national capital.

As per the Delhi High Court order, people will have to carry Aadhaar cards while going for tests. They will also be required to fill up forms from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), which is the country’s nodal agency of the battle against the coronavirus.
