New Delhi: The coronavirus situation is again becoming grim in Delhi as the city recorded its highest single-day spike ever on Wednesday. The daily new cases broke its record which was reported more than two months back on June 23. The new cases have started rising significantly ten days back and the rising streak continued barring one day.
Delhi on Wednesday recorded 4,039 new cases, taking the cumulative tally to 2,01,174. The mark of 4,000 new cases was breached for the first time since the pandemic had hit the national capital. Over the past week, Delhi has recorded more than 2,800 new cases every day on an average. This has happened with the record number of tests conducted in the last 24 hours.
A total of 54,517 tests were conducted in the national capital. Out of that, 11,101 RTPCR tests and 43,416 rapid antigen tests were conducted. On Tuesday, the city had recorded 3,609 new cases, which was the highest single-day spike in the last 76 days. The authorities had conducted 45,797 tests on the previous day.
The testing has been ramped up aggressively on the directions of the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. He had said that testing would be increased to 40,000 per day and later on, also announced that a doctor’s prescription will not be required for people to go for testing in the national capital. Ever since the testing has been increased, the new cases have also started rising sharply.
The new cases were rising rapidly in May and June but it started to come down significantly by the end of June after registering the highest spike on June 23. Thereafter, there was a steady drop in new cases for around three weeks. The seven-day average of new cases had even dropped to 983 by August 4. However, the cases started rising again from the mid-August.
Amid such a scenario, the much talked about second wave is very much into reckoning if the figures of the last ten days come into picture. The figures are going skywards. The situation worsened on most of the parameters. The new cases have been continuously outnumbering the recoveries by significant margins. It affected the active cases figures adversely. Active cases had once gone below 10,000 mark in the national capital. But it is now above the 23,000 mark.
A total of 2,623 people recovered from the deadly disease in the last 24 hours, taking the figure of total recoveries to 1,72,763. Active cases increased by 1,396 on Wednesday. Now, Delhi has 23,773 active cases. Barring Monday, the active cases had increased by more than 1,000 in the last seven days. Meanwhile, with 20 fatalities, the death toll has now reached 4,638 in the national capital.
Amid all this, the metro services were started from Monday. As per Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), approximately 33,000 people travelled in the yellow, pink and blue lines on Wednesday.
