Delhi again logs more than 4k cases, Health Minister fears community spread

New Delhi: Continuing with a higher number of daily infections, Delhi registered more than 4,000 new cases again on Saturday. In the last 11 days, more than 4,000 new cases have been recorded in ten days. With this, there is a fear that community transmission has prevailed in the city. Health Minister Satyendar Jain said that he feels that the community spread of coronavirus has hit Delhi and it should be admitted by the Centre.

Delhi on Saturday recorded 4,071 fresh cases, taking the cumulative tally to 2,42,899. Delhi had registered 4,127 cases on Friday, 4,432 cases on Thursday, 4,473 cases on Wednesday, 4,263 cases on Tuesday, 3,229 cases on Monday, 4,235 cases on Sunday, 4,321 cases on Saturday, 4,266 cases on Friday.

However, the recent upsurge has happened with the increased number of tests in the national capital this month. Saturday was another day when more than 60,000 tests were conducted. It was the fifth consecutive day when more than 60,000 tests were conducted. 51,292 rapid antigen tests and 10,681 RTPCR, CBNAAT and True Nat tests were conducted in the last 24 hours. The total number of tests stood at over 24.92 lakh.

Here are the number of tests conducted and the respective fresh cases being registered in the period of September 1-18: 14,389 (1,358); 20,437 (2,024); 24,198 (2,312); 28,835 (2,509); 32,834 (2,737); 36,219 (2,914) 38,895 (2,973); 36,046 (3,256); 22,954 (2,077); 45,797 (3,609); 54,517 (4,039); 58,340 (4,308); 60,580 (4,266); 60,076 (4,321); 56,656 (4,235); 44,884 (3,229); 62,669 (4,263); 62,593 (4,473); 60,014 (4,432) and 61,037 (4,127).

However, the one positive side, which has come out in the last few days, is that the positivity rate has also gone down of late. Health Minister Satyendar Jain said that there has been a downward trend in coronavirus positivity rate in the national capital and it will lead to good results by next week.

He said, “The positivity rate was 6.76 per cent on Friday. It has remained below 7 per cent in the last two-three days. Last week, it was around 8 per cent.” Jain further said that the cumulative positivity rate has also dropped below 10 per cent for the first time. The positivity rate stood at 6.57 per cent on Saturday.

Apart from the increase in the positivity rate, there has been improvement in daily recoveries as well. The number of recoveries crossed 4,000 mark on Saturday. With 4,219 recoveries, the total number of recoveries increased to 2,05,890. The daily recovery figures have been above 3,000 in the last few days. The recovery rate slightly increased to 84.76 from 84.44 per cent on the previous day. The recovery rate had come down after going past the 90 per cent mark earlier and being there for many days.

However, the worrying factor has been an increase in the number of deaths of late. On Saturday, 38 deaths were reported from the city, taking the toll to 4,945. Earlier, 30 and 38 deaths were reported on Friday and Thursday respectively. Highest daily spike in the number of deaths in the two months was reported on Thursday.

The active cases have come down by 186 in Delhi on Saturday. The total number of active cases decreased to 32,064 in the last 24 hours. Of the total beds available for treatment in the city, 7,953 were vacant.
